Most people underdress for the harbor because they're thinking about the temperature on land. The water changes the math. Wind off the water cuts differently. Damp air pulls warmth away faster. The temperature drops faster after sunset than it does anywhere inland. What feels fine on the dock feels inadequate the moment you're moving.
The fix is simple: a three-layer system that handles any harbor, in any season. Here's how it works.
Layer One: The Base
The base layer sits against your skin and handles moisture and warmth close to the body. On the harbor, this means a heavyweight cotton tee — short sleeve in summer, long sleeve in shoulder season and fall. The weight matters here too: a thin tee bunches under a hoodie and doesn't hold warmth on its own. A heavyweight tee works as a standalone layer when the conditions are mild and disappears cleanly under the mid-layer when they're not.
The base layer is the one most people get wrong. They reach for whatever's lightest. On the harbor, that's the layer you'll regret.
Layer Two: The Mid-Layer
This is where most of the thermal work happens. The mid-layer traps warmth from the base and holds it against the body when the wind picks up or the temperature drops. On the harbor, this means a heavyweight pullover — not a zip-up, not a thin fleece. A pullover with enough weight to hold warmth in damp air and enough structure to sit correctly over a tee without bunching or losing its shape.

The shell is the layer most people bring and don't use, or don't bring and wish they had. Bring it. It folds flat, it weighs nothing, and the one time you need it you'll be glad it's there.
How the System Works Together
